College to People By Way of KTAL-TV A Public Service

“The idea of taking college instruction to the general public, by way of television, is an excellent way for people who have had no college education, or for people to ‘up-date’ their education and keep in touch with recent developments,” stated Mr. Rolfe A. Wylie, speech instructor at TC.

Mr. Wylie is winding up his last week of a four week course on communication for Channel 6, KTAL-TV presented each weekday morning at 6:30 A.M.

The first two weeks of Mr. Wylie’s segment had emphasis placed on public speaking. The next week and a half was used to illustrate written communication and the last three days will be used to demonstrate sign language used for communication with the deaf persons in our society.

Even though the shows are taped in advance for presentation at air time, there have been some humorous connotations connected with the show. One such happening was when Mrs. Meredith Beug, one of Mr. Wylie’s students (and a reporter for the TC Campus News) demonstrated the correct and the incorrect way to give a speech. George Dobson, Newsman for the Texarkana station, got up early one morning to catch the show. He turned on his TV set in time to catch Meredith give the “How Not to Speech.” Meredith was in the process of twirling her beaded necklace, forgetting her lines and running back to the podium to check her notes and in general, making a perfect illustration on how not to give a speech before an audience. Mr. Dobson, fearful of what the general manager might say if he was watching, jumped into his clothes and drove all the way to the TV station in time to catch Meredith giving her How to give a speech presentation.

Mr. Wylie has his BSE and MSE from Henderson State in Arkadelphia and is presently working on his Ed.D at East Texas State University in Commerce.
