Christmas is probably the most controversial reoccurrence with no apparent compromise between the “XMASers” and the “CHRISTMASers.”
Christmas is a combination of traditions dating from the earliest recorded history. The Christmas tree has survived as a festivity centerpiece from the ancient Druids, with the selection of evergreen trees as meaning life in the dead of winter.
The nomenclature “Christmas” obviously comes from the supposed birth of Christ, and the exchange of gifts and wishes comes from both the wise men and kings bearing gifts and a legendary St. Nicholas in Holland.
The setting of Christmas on Dec. 25 was accomplished in the changing years of the Roman Empire as a legislative feat to combine “pagan” festivities and Christian Holidays.
Due to the compromised background of the Holiday, many people are prone to discount the full effects of the season. Regardless of the mongrel appearance of “XMAS,” it remains the most joyful and universal celebration of life, incorporating more of the traditions of history than any other.
With pride as humans and of our history, we should indulge in the smiles, gaiety, gift exchanging of Christmas. It is a noble statement of human nature that people will celebrate together in the midst of cold winter. Christmas or Xmas, it remains THE HOLIDAY. Celebrate.
