Expensive Hobby: Prelude to Life Work

Even though no other member in Ben Morphew’s family has ever flown an airplane and his father had to bail out the first time he rode in a plane, Ben has taken quite an interest in flying.

This second year air-tech student also loves airplanes and spends much of his free time working with them. Without any previous training or ex-perience, Ben renovated the ex-terior and interior of a 1946 model two-seater Champ in his spare time. Ben worked on this in the old Methodist Church of Linden from June 1969 until May 1970. He mentioned that it was a little more work than he expected.

The sophomore student re-upholstered the interior in black and brown vinyl and re-covered the exterior in red and cream. The entire project cost approximately $1,000.

Ben received his commercial license in 1969, but he has been flying for five years. He intends to continue in aerial application corporation flying.

Other than flying, Ben’s hobbies include music. He plays the trombone in the Stage Band at TC.
