Vickie Smith, who claims that she is a “hippie from Warsaw, New York,” tells why she chose Texarkana College and why she likes it here.
A vivacious young girl, Vickie is a speech-drama major driving a red Volkswagen. She is wearing a pair of jeans and a variegated sweater. She fits the style of the true liberated hippie. Though she lived in Warsaw, New York, for the past five years, she decided to move to the south for a 2 year study and attend Texarkana College. “Why Texarkana College?”
One has to understand first that Miss Smith has lived all over the United States. She has lived in several different states. She has a good background and can expect to find in most of them.
Her parents decided to come to Texas because her father had a heart condition and disliked the weather in New York. Miss Smith lived in New York and attend college there. She came to Texas with them. She enjoys traveling and has the traveling bug but a funny thing happened on her first trip to Texarkana.
Miss Smith says, “I was following my parents, and rear-ended them. It cost me $100.00 to get them. It was in the middle of storm, so no one could see just how scared over to the side of the highway. After that, I had a good cry during the storm. I said, ‘I’m not supposed to try and find them. Forget it. I’ll follow the trailer on the side of the road and I’ll get there.’ And I followed the trailer and said, ‘I will stick to the trailer and she still likes to travel.
When she got to Texarkana, she discovered that the climate was milder, and the people were friendlier. Even though her first trip was something else, she decided to stay. Once settled, she continued to find the most interesting new friends and finding things to do. Her neighbors in her neighborhood happen to be a member of a rock group and invited her and a friend of hers over for a practice session. Members and friends of the group are very congenial and entertaining. She has made many friends in the Southerners.
“People like this one man swayed her thinking about the South. I like Texarkana College because its smaller than the big schools. It’s not too busy and friendly. It’s not hard to get someone to talk to here,” says Ms. Smith.
“People seem to live faster in New York State or for that matter in the North. I think life is too hectic up north.”
For the many states that Vicky has visited or lived in she says, “I like the South because the climate is more milder and the people are friendlier.”
