Swimming, Basketball, Bowling Wind Up Action

Christmas holidays are coming up, and it is time for bowl games and pro championships. From me to you, have a nice holiday. Now, on with the sports.

Only one record was broken in the recent intramural swim meet held Dec. 6, and Bob Click had the honor of doing it. In the 50 yd. butterfly event, Bob swam it in 37.4 seconds, beating out Noel Durbin’s old record of 39.8 set last spring.

In other events, Noel Durbin came in first on the 50 yd. freestyle with 28.8 seconds. Gary Ricker and Joe Johnson placed second and third, respectively. Barbara Sanford did the girls 50 yd. freestyle in 33.7, and also won the girls 50 yd. back crawl in 48 seconds. Last, but not least, she won the girls 50 yd. breast stroke in 49 seconds.

Jim Kunkel took honors in the 100 yd. breast stroke with a 1:23.3, and also withstood the hardships of the 200 yd. breast stroke event with 3:34.3. Although Noel Durbin didn’t break any of his old records this time around, he proved swimming still comes easy by taking the 100 yd. freestyle in 2:32.

Gary Ricker won two events. First, the 50 yd. back crawl in 37.4, and the 100 yd. back crawl in 1:37.6. Joe Johnson ends the list of top performers with 18 seconds in the 25 yd. butterfly event.

The swimming event was moderately successful, but hopes are that more records will be broken in another meet coming in the spring. With fine swimmers like those above, plus Karen Bradshaw and David Musselman, along with Coach Dixie Horning, there’s no doubt in my mind that records will be broken.

SYNCHRONIZE is defined in the dictionary as “to occur at the same time or be simultaneous.” But what does this have to do with swimming? Well, Sue Works, swimming instructor, has conjured up a plan for synchronized swimming at TC.

Swimming in motion, to music, doing formations with fellow swimmers is the deal. “Although it seems like it, it is not only for girls,” explained Mrs. Works. “Boys can be a part of the team also.”

Now in the beginning stages, practices now occur on Sundays, and recruiting for the swimming event in April is now in the works.

Hopes are high for a club, such as the Swimmettes, or whatever. If you’re interested, go see Mrs. Works at the pool for more info. Although I’ve never seen it displayed, it sounds like a fairly beautiful form of art.

NEW RECORD SET — Coach Dixie Horning kneels to discuss the recent intramural swimming meet with Bob Click, record breaker in the 50 yard butterfly event. Another swimming meet is scheduled for the Spring semester.

Basketball Each Week

Basketball is bouncing along in fine form on Tuesdays and Thursdays. For an update on what’s been happening, here it is.

With T-minus five seconds and counting, the score was tied between the Black Knights and Hed’s Heads, 50-50. But Stanley Easter of the Knights got his hands on the ball, raced down the court, shot in desperation, and the ball popped the net as the final second ticked. Final score — Black Knights 52, Hed’s Heads 50.

True basketball was displayed in the contest, with the score bouncing as much as the ball. Earnest Casteel led the Knights with an outstanding 22 points, while Ken Copeland sunk 18 points for the Heads.

Two days later, it was the Dirty Dribblers against the Raiders. After coming back from a 20-14 halftime score with the Raiders on top, the Dribblers suddenly came alive and dribbled to a 42-32 victory. Willie Mack was high man for the Dribblers with 14 points, but Mark Dy-mycenksi of the Raiders was in true fashion with 20 points.

On Dec. 4, the Hopping Hoppers and Hed’s Heads went against each other. The Heads came out on top, 59-47. Walton Gamble of the Hoppers and Ken Copeland of the Heads shared top game scoring honors with 17 points apiece.

Played on the following Thursday, Murdock’s Gang downed the Raiders 33-26. A low scoring contest, Barry Murdock was the highest for the Gang with 11 points, while Rocky Brown of the Raiders did his part with 7 points.

As things stand now, Murdock’s Gang is number one with a perfect 2-0 record. Following close behind are the Black Knights, 1-0; Dirty Dribblers, 1-0; Hopsing Hoppers, 1-1; Hed’s Heads, 1-1; Wild Bunch, 0-1; Circle K, 0-1; and the Raiders, 0-2.

Bowling Activity

KEEPING ALONG with those Coed Bowlers, some honors have switched hands as far as figures go. In high games, Rodney Hulet has ousted Bird Dog Shields for the boys division with a 217. Georgia Smith steps in Gwenda Delaughter’s old spot for the girls with a 172.

In the averages, Larry Wells takes the crown from Bill Ferguson with a 151, while Madeline Berry still wears hers with a 132. As far as high series goes, Kim Henderson is the example for the girls with 457, while Larry Wells leads the boys with 568.

Even the top team has changed. Say goodbye to “Bird Dog” Shileifs, Christal Phiffer, and Fergy Ferguson, and say hello to Gwenda De-laughter, Georgia Smith, and Rodney Hulet. They now have the best won-lost record of the league.
