I am very concerned with the attitudes of both Sophomores and Freshmen in the elections held at Texarkana College. What does it take for the students to realize that they live in a democratic society, and voting is a right and a privilege? It is very disgusting to see an election take place and so few people voted. Will it be that minority of students that vote who will decide our fate in the upcoming years?
We have heard many comments on the right of 18-year-olds to vote, but after the election for the class favorites and class officers, I am rather skeptical about what difference the 18-year-old vote would serve in our present society.
You’ve heard many complaints about the elected officials, but what have you done to try to change the situation? I may now sound a little corny, but I’m beginning to feel more like the older generation about my peers. I’m afraid that we are irresponsible, and the majority of the students do not care.
Let me quote the figures of the important elections that we have had this semester; in the class officers and student senate election approximately 500 voted out of a total student enrollment of 1900, which is only 26 percent. In our last election of class favorites, there were less than 200 votes cast.
THINK ABOUT THE FUTURE MY FRIENDS.
