Bright sun, cold wind, and the hot passing arm of Darrel Fincher stunned the Headhunters, giving the Bears a 35-0 victory last Tuesday, December 7, capturing the Intramural Football Championship.
Headhunters, hungry for a win, just couldn’t get the ball rolling—or should I say flying. If ever the forward pass was meant to help win ball games, the Bears certainly made their use of it pay off. Little Fincher, running well and sending aerial bombs to Tommy Brown and Ronnie Green, proved too much of an air attack for the Headhunter defense.
Gene Bobo, Bears’ mean center, started the scoring early in the first quarter covering a live ball rule fumble in the end zone. Extra point attempt failed. Bears lead 6-0. Later in the quarter a bad snap from center gave the Bear defense a chance to mob the quarterback, racking up a safety. Bears favor 8-0. Bears received kickoff and Fincher carried his team downfield scoring on a pass to Ronnie Green. Extra point no good. Score: 14-0.
Headhunters had their best chance to change the dilemma with a covered fumble at the Bears fourteen yard line. During four plays the Bears defense held ground leaving the Headhunters scoreless.
During the last half, Fincher launched the ball, skipping it across field like a young boy would a flat rock on a pond. Fincher to Brown to Green combo gave the Bears two touchdowns while Brown ran for two consecutive extra points making the score 28-0, Bears favor. The last TD of the game set up by a fumble was a Fincher to Brown to Hughes pass. Brown then passed to Hughes for the PAT. Score: 35-0, Bears victory!
The Bear defense played great with Bobo, Weldon Black, Donny Plum, Laird, on the front wall while Fincher and Brown batted balls down like swatting flies. Fincher intercepted twice, as did Brown.
Asked what happened to the Headhunters:
John McKinnie groaned, “A good quarterback and hustling defense,” and Gene Dale said, “Well organized ball club, rough and lots of desire; good physical shape.”
