Book Review: Importance of Money Is Universal Fact

Through history the French and Germans have perpetuated a series of disagreements and wars. The proverbs of the countries, however, agree about the importance of money.

“The richest man carries nothing away with him but his shroud,” according to the French.

The Germans say, “Better (to have) an empty purse than an empty head.”

The Hebrews agree, “For riches certainly make themselves wings.”

On the subject of “the crowd” a Chinese proverb notes that “You have a desire to do whatever you see others doing.”

“Fools go in throngs” according to a French proverb. In a more contemplative attitude an Arabic saying is that “The society of the wise confers honor, that of the ignorant contempt.”

Different national viewpoints on these subjects and others including love, marriage and experience make interesting reading in The Book of Proverbs by Paul Rosenzweig.
