Christmas Mail Needs Attention

Do you know what a “Nixie” is? Probably not if you haven’t worked for the Post Office Department.

“Nixie” is a term that does not make for a Merry Christmas. A “Nixie” is a dead letter or package—it is a piece of mail that for one reason or another can’t be delivered. Usually a “Nixie” does not reach its destination because the address can’t be read—or the address is completely wrong, or in a package the address label has become separated from the parcel.

Why this information? Because this Christmas, Postmaster General Lawrence F. O’Brien predicts a new record of well over nine billion pieces of mail during the holiday season. You can ensure delivery if you:

  1. Address each piece of mail clearly,
  2. Use ZIP Codes,
  3. Pack all parcels solidly,
  4. Mail gifts to distant states not later than Dec. 4,
  5. Mail greeting cards to distant states by Dec. 10,
  6. Mail gifts and greeting cards to nearby areas not later than Dec. 13.

If you do all these things, your gifts and cards will not be “Nixies.”
