Circle K Nabs Championship In Intramural Flag Football

Circle K, displaying a well-organized and disciplined attack, copped its second consecutive championship by downing the Dirty Dozen 14-0 in the title game of the Intramural Flag Football Tournament Oct. 31.

Scoring on a rollout of 15 yards by quarterback Benny Cox in the first half and a fake field goal and a run of 10 yards by Harrell Bivins on the last play of the game, Circle K repulsed a strong challenge from a Dirty Dozen team.

Mike Park, who hooked up with Circle K’s Randy Jones in a fine head to head battle, continually harrassed Circle K’s ballcarriers, roaming from sideline to sideline in an attempt to stop Circle K’s powerful rushing game.

Parks couldn’t do it all however as two costly illegal procedure penalties wiped out a touchdown by Jerry Hayes, and 50-yard pass and run play from Dirty Dozen quarterback Jeff Taylor to end Gene Capshaw that ended on the Circle K 10 yard line.

Circle K whipped New Boston 7-0 in their first round game, scoring on a pass from Cox to Bivens, then came back to beat the Wolverines 14-0 in the semifinals behind the throwing of Cox, the running of Frank Sterle and Pat Craven and defensive work of Jones, David Bayse and Gary Treadway.

The Dirty Dozen reached the finals with a 13-0 victory over the Road Runners in the first round game and a 7-0 decision over the Bulldogs in the semifinals.

After scoring on a 12-yard pass from Taylor to Capshaw in the first half the Dirty Dozen had to fight off a last ditch rally by the Bulldogs to preserve the victory.

In the two first round games the Road Runners defeated the Cobras 12-0 behind the passing of quarterback Danny Green and the running and catching of Lutian Murphy, while the Chaparrals advanced with a victory on penetrations after fighting to a 0-0 tie with the Bearcats.

In quarterfinal games the Bulldogs edged by the Whiz Kids 7-6, Dirty Dozen shut down Green and Murphy 12-0, the Wolverines and Chaparrals fought to 6-6 tie with the Wolverines with the Wolverines advancing to the semi-finals on the basis of more penetrations, and Circle K eliminated New Boston 7-0.
