Dr. James R. Oliver, Dean of the Graduate School and Director of the Computing Center at the University of Southwestern Louisiana, Lafayette, spoke on the Texarkana College campus November 12 and 13.
He spoke to students presently enrolled in data processing courses and to engineering, science, language, and mathematics classes on the use of computers and their possibilities. Dr. Oliver chose computers for his discussion because of the influence they have and will have on our lives. “In years to come the use of computers will be greatly expanded because of the fantastic increase in the speed of computers and the continuing decrease in the cost per operation of the machine,” he said.
In defining the two terms, computer and computing, as information processor and information processing, Dr. Oliver made his discussion more understandable. He also emphasized the use of computers in educational activities which he defined as the process of teaching by formal means with computing machines. Several other fields were discussed in which computer machines are and will be used.
