FIVE-YEAR HISTORY SHOWS TEACHER FESTIVAL GROWTH

December 6 and 7 East Texas State held its fifth annual festival designed to encourage interest in the teaching profession.

Since that April day in 1953 when the first festival was held with 25 schools represented, the program has steadily gained momentum.

Future teachers from colleges of five states arrived on the E. T. campus Thursday for the annual Teacher Festival.

Thursday night the delegates attended a reception and art exhibit in the home economics building. At 8 P.M. the group saw “Don Juan in Hell,” courtesy of the Student Committee for the Advancement of the Teaching Profession.

Friday the visiting delegates were given a tour of the campus by their hosts, Mr. and Miss E. T. Teacher of Tomorrow, LaDale Brimmage and Billie Holloway.

Friday afternoon each delegate presented a two-minute talk to school superintendents from this area, who acted as judges.

Superintendents who were judges are B. H. Hudspeth, Atlanta; T. M. Martin, Carthage; R. L. Fambrough, Clarksville; Wade Bledsoe, Cooper; J. D. Parrish, Daingerfield; Kermit Wommock, Detroit; N. O. Wright, Fernsville; and Glen B. Covet, Garland.

Also Gary C. Pryor, Grand Saline; F. C. Burnett, Ladonia; Marson E. Amerson, Mt. Pleasant; Frank C. Bean, Pewitt Schools (Naples-Omaha); Thomas S. Justiss, Paris; E. A. Sigler, Plaino; C. E. Keebert, Rockwall; and S. O. Loving, Talco; Jack F. Gibson, Sulphur Springs; R. C. Fagg, White Oak; and Jimmy Phillips, Kaufman.

Colleges which submitted advance nominations for the Teacher titles were Texarkana, Southeastern Louisiana, University of Oklahoma, Southwestern Oklahoma, Concordia, East Texas Baptist, Lamar Tech, North Texas, Southwest Texas, San Antonio, Texas A & M, Wayland Baptist, Southeast Texas State College, Kilgore, Henderson County Junior College, Southeast Texas State, Cameron State A & M, Southwestern State, Weatherford.

Mr. and Miss Teacher of Tomorrow was announced at an assembly program Friday night at 7:30 in the college auditorium. They are Mr. Teacher of Tomorrow Lon Jackson from Lamar Tech and Miss Teacher of Tomorrow Janet Brower from Southwestern Oklahoma.

The assembly included a musical program and a speech by Dr. W. T. White, superintendent of the Dallas public schools. Dr. Arthur Pullen served as master of ceremonies. The final event of the Teacher of Tomorrow festival was the annual All-College Christmas formal held in the Student Union Building.
