Thursday, November 22, was designated “Homecoming Day” at Texarkana College this year. The day was highlighted by three events: the crowning of Miss Ann Atchley, a sophomore student from DeKalb, as homecoming queen; a win for the Bulldogs over Southwest Mississippi Junior College; and a dance after the game in the new recreation room.
Miss Atchley was chosen as queen from a group of girls selected by the football team and voted on by the student body. She was escorted onto the field by Shelby Shipp, Vice-President of the Bulldog Booster Club, and crowned by Dr. H. W. Stillwell, President of the college, who took the crown from the head of last year’s homecoming queen, Miss Carole Lee Higgins of New Boston, who was escorted by Mr. McKnight.
The queen’s attendants and their escorts were: Gayle May from DeKalb, Texas, escorted by Johnny Massey; Beverly Bratton from Nashville, Arkansas, escorted by Hiram Clark; Lu Hulsey from Green Forrest, Arkansas, escorted by L. C. Garth; Diana Durham of Texarkana, Texas, escorted by Lacy Lawrence; Carole Ferguson of Texarkana, Texas, escorted by Mr. Hicks; and Ann Anderson of Texarkana, Arkansas, escorted by Roy Phillips. All the maids are freshmen with the exception of Miss Ferguson and Miss Anderson.
The homecoming parade was staged downtown Wednesday, Nov. 21. The queen rode in a convertible as did her maids and the cheerleaders.
