Many Interesting Courses Offered by TC Night School

During the spring semester several new non-credit night courses will be introduced at Texarkana College.

Scheduled to begin, provided that enough people register, are knitting, interior decorating, investment information, blueprint reading, diet and weight control, instrument pilot training, photography, Federal revenue income tax returns, and introduction to conversational Russian.

These classes vary from those which are for people who wish to learn a skill to those which are strictly for enjoyment.

One of the many classes offered is the beginner’s bridge course, taught by Mrs. Kitty Russo; persons who have never played bridge can learn the basics of this popular game in three-hour sessions once a week.

Charm Course

Another that could be considered in this group is the charm course taught by Mrs. Joy Head, a graduate of Mr. Lynn’s in Shreveport. This course is designed to help the business as well as the non-business woman, and the high school and college student become conscious rather than self-conscious of herself.

With the experience which Mrs. Head has had in this field she is well qualified to teach the six phases included in this course. These are visual poise, posture and styling, make-up techniques, figure control, personality development, and wig styling.

Preflight School

The new preflight ground school is of interest to persons who desire to complete every phase toward training for a private pilot’s license. Wayne Faulkinbury is using the Sanderson Film Methods of instruction. Some of the major areas that are covered are the preflight facts, meteorology, flight computer, navigation, radio navigation, and Federal Aviation Agency regulations.

G.E.D. Testing

One non-credit course that is very practical is the G.E.D. preparation course. The General Educational Development Test has been developed by the American Council of Education.

The individual who passes the test will be assured a high school equivalency certificate which is of equal value to a high school diploma. This test consists of six parts. These include: grammar, social studies, natural sciences, literature, and general mathematics. This class meets three hours a week for 15 weeks. Instructors are Mrs. Linda Watson and Donald Hobbs.

A course in English is offered for personal improvement in the areas of basic grammar, spelling, vocabulary building, faster reading, and letter writing. This course, designed to help the business man and woman, is being taught by Rolfe Wylie.

Social Problems

A social problems course dealing with the rapidly changing system of social institutions in the fields of urban unrest, housing problems, racial tension, deprivation in the urban ghettos, economic dependence, correction both juvenile and adult, and mental health is being offered. The objective of this course is to provide a beginning understanding of how social welfare concepts and institutions have developed through tradition, experience, and sociological change.

This course will be helpful to those who are employed in the welfare programs, health fields, correction, and rehabilitation. It will also be of value to volunteers and persons who would like to be informed in this field.

A key punch operation class has been organized. Key punch operation is one phase of data processing. There is a big demand in this field at present. Carl Self is teaching this course three hours a week for six weeks.

Speed Reading Offered

A course that could be of help in one’s work or for one’s personal enjoyment is the speed reading class. Designed to assist the individual in attaining a higher degree of speed and comprehension at the same time.

This course will consist of lab work in the area of eye exercise and training in eye movement. Projection machines and mechanical rate reading meters are being used in all phases of lab work.
