The Texarkana College Library was recently presented over 200 books from Mrs. Howard Lightbody, Mena, Arkansas.
The collection, chiefly concerning medicine, nutrition, and the sciences, is part of the personal library of the late Dr. Howard Lightbody of Mena.
Dr. Lightbody, a native of Illinois, was born in 1891 and died November 1, 1965. He received his bachelor’s degree from Illinois State University in 1914, his master’s degree from the University of Chicago in 1917, and his doctorate in 1930 from the University of Michigan in the field of biochemistry.
During his distinguished career, Dr. Lightbody was assistant professor of chemistry at Michigan State from 1917 to 1928; he was director of the John C. Oliver Research Foundation in Pittsburg from 1928 to 1931; he was senior biochemist with U.S. Food and Drug Administration from 1931 to 1939; he served as principal biochemist at the Western Regional Research Laboratory, U.S. Department of Agriculture from 1939 to 1946; and prior to his retirement in 1952, he served as director of the Food Research Laboratories of the Armed Forces, Quartermaster Food and Container Institute.
Concerning the gift, Dr. J. W. Cady, president of Texarkana College, said, “We are most grateful for these volumes. They will be most useful as reference works and for research by the students and the faculty.”
Mrs. Lightbody is the sister of Howard C. Brown of the Texarkana State Employment Office.
