The Bulldogs mixed it up with the Wharton Pioneers before a homecoming crowd of 5,000 at Wharton November 7, with the game ending in a 7–7 tie.
The opening quarter set the pattern for the whole game as neither team could drive the ball across the other’s 40-yard line.
Wharton got a break in the second quarter when Reed Mobley backed up to punt on his own six, got a low snap from center, fumbled, and the Pioneers recovered. On the third down, Wharton’s Paul Fry found an opening in the middle and went through for the touchdown. The PAT was good.
The Bulldogs came on stronger after half time to even the score when Rusty Kohler and McKinney separated Fry from the ball on TC’s 41. On the third down Smith and Houston started things rolling. Smith passed the ball and hit Houston on the enemy’s 40. The freshman speedster left two tacklers empty handed, outran the last opposing player, and went over for the TD. McKinney tied the score as his kick for the extra point split the upright.
