Dr. Henry W. Stilwell, the first president of Texarkana College, was honored all over Texas on Nov. 8, a date which was designated by the State Education Association as Henry W. Stilwell Day.
The Texarkana College committee worked to see that Dr. Stilwell’s memory was properly observed. W. F. Akin wrote of Dr. Stilwell’s life and his contributions to Texarkana College. Mrs. Charles B. Curren also participated in the memorial activities.
A memorial service was held at Waco, Texas, organized by the National Memorial Assembly for Stilwell. The assembly followed the programs of the National Memorial Committee for Stilwell.
The inclusion of instructors from Texarkana College who attended the service — Miss Billings Patterson, Mrs. Judy De of Woman of Dr. [Stilwell’s?] administration — along with Mrs. Charles B. Curren, who also helped to arrange the service, gave the occasion a strong Texarkana College presence.
The Texarkana College committee composed of W. F. Akin who wrote of Dr. Stilwell’s life and contribution to Texarkana College, and Walter R. Wills who closed the program with a recitation of several selections, asked students to help continue through the years the traditions Stilwell established at Texarkana College. W. P. Akin also spoke of how Stilwell was one of the leading contributors to a Corporation Club and a Demonstration Club at TC. The choir sang at the memorial as did Stilwell’s original Board members in praise of what he accomplished.
